I can’t believe we are getting close to the end of summer. I don’t know about you, but my kids go back to school on August 10th. Because of that – we’ve already started the annual, “back to school” shopping, including a2 Milk® on our necessary school supply list! This year we were going to focus on better choices in nutrition AND study habits.
Each year my kids get to pick out a new backpack and lunch bag as well as new supplies required by their classes. Picking out the school supplies was an easy task. We utilize Brick by Brick – a fundraising program in partnership with Office Depot where the teachers, along with the PTA, set a supply list for each grade level. Parents can purchase the supplies on line and within a day or two, the school supplies will be delivered directly to the student’s doorstep. The best part, a small portion of the proceeds goes directly to the school and PTA.
When shopping for back packs and lunch bags, I told my munchkins that with a new school year, we will be focusing on making better choices when it comes to school work and snacking options. The plan: when we get home, we’ll have a balanced snack – a glass of a2 Milk®, fruit, and if they still have room, maybe a granola bar or cookies. So many times they would grab whatever soda and candy they could find. NOT ANY MORE! Now, by implementing smarter choices and making sure they are readily available, they’re eating better at mealtime as well.
With regards to milk, we’ve slowly made a transition to a2 Milk®. Recently my son told us the tummy issues he had while at school. He LOVES to grab a nice cold glass of milk when the craving strikes him, but then he’d have stomach issues and not eat. Once we decided to make the switch, his symptoms subsided. Apparently traditional milk contains an A1 protein that is the main cause of many dairy issues. The a2 Milk® brand comes from specially selected a2 cows, who’s milk is naturally free of the A1 protein.
While I don’t have the issues digesting dairy that my son seems to have, my mom does. A HUGE milk drinker all her life, she can no longer stomach conventional milk. As a matter of fact, I tried a brand she had in her refrigerator and I just couldn’t drink it. The taste turned me off. However, a2 Milk® Company™ has developed a product that is tasty and REAL milk – not a nut or bean alternative.
Now that the kids are all set with their supplies, we set the new “choices” in motion. While sorting through their school supplies getting everything organized and labeled, I brought out snacks. A nice glass of a2 Milk®, apple slices (which they devoured first), and a cookie. Had it been a regular school day, they would have been ready to start their homework. Maybe it’s time for the “substitute teacher” skills to kick in and give them designated reading time and practice worksheets so it’s not such a difficult transition come August.
