Have you heard? McDonalds has been adding some healthier options to their menu. Last week I was invited to find out more about the new Egg White Delight McMuffin and tour the Buena Park location.
I have to admit, I have always enjoyed McDonalds since I was a kid. Even when I’m “under the weather”, I crave the salty french fries. However, if you’ve been following my Instagram feeds, you would have seen that I just underwent a treadmill test – checking on my heart. I have a history of heart disease in my family, and since my blood pressure issues presented when I was pregnant with my child, my doctor thought I should visit a cardiologist. Knowing my history, I really need to start making changes in my life in order to make sure I’m around long enough to see my kids grow up.
That being said, as a Mom on the go, there are times I’m looking for a quick meal I can squeeze in just before dance class or baseball practice, but since I’ve been on the go all day, I haven’t had time to prepare a balanced meal. With the new items on the menu, McDonalds is helping my family make smarter choices.
During my visit at McDonalds, I got a chance to speak with their nutritionist, Monica Montes, RD about eating habits, choices, portion control and more. Did you know that McDonalds has 2 registered dietitians in Southern California alone that go out and educate families about healthy choices. She even shared an amazing resource: https://www.choosemyplate.gov/ that helps educate people on balanced meals, healthy eating tips and more. The balanced plate shown to the right is what we “should” be eating at every meal, daily. What a change from what it was when I was growing up.
As a healthier breakfast option, McDonalds just introduced the new Egg White Delight McMuffin. This 250 calorie breakfast sandwich features 100% freshly cracked eggs, white cheddar cheese and extra lean Canadian Bacon, sandwiched between a new English muffin which packs eight grams of whole grains. The Egg White Delight McMuffin helps customers incorporate foods from some of the USDA’s My Plate recommended food groups, and is part of McDonald’s commitment to offer improved nutritional choices. In my opinion, I must say this is an option I would choose. Not only is this sandwich a healthier choice than say the breakfast burrito I usually crave, it is delicious!
