My kids are finally starting to hit some serious growth spurts. With that, they’re finally growing out of the toddler sizes and into big kids clothes. The predicament, closets and drawers full of clothes that don’t fit. While I’ve used consignment sales in the past, I’ve decided that donating seems to be the best fit for us. There are organizations like Schoola that consign gently used clothes at amazing prices. Specific schools in the program receive the proceeds from each item sold, money that funds programs so critical to the success of our kids.
I recall being in high school and not having one athletic bone in my body. As a freshman and sophomore, I was required to take P.E. and not very happy about it. Back then, dance was a class offered to students who were interested, filling the P.E. requirement. Luckily, I was able to enroll as a sophomore and absolutely loved it; however, in my junior year, the program was discontinued due to a lack of funding.
Sad to say, that many of these amazing programs are now being cut from schools across the country due to lack of funding, especially valuable art programs. When it comes to my kids, they love art. They doodle, draw and paint whenever they get a chance. I couldn’t imagine if they didn’t have the supplies they needed in school to explore their creativity. Schools are getting down to bare minimum when it comes to funding, and we can’t expect our teachers to rely on their salaries to support the needed supplies.
Schoola was launched in 2012-2013 by Stacey Boyd; a parent/teacher and school principal; who started this program as a simple fundraiser, that has now grown to 3,000 schools strong. Schoola is an online store that recycles brand name gently used children’s clothing with 40% ($2 of every $5 received) of the proceeds going to schools in need.
Such an amazing program, I’ve decided to become a part of the “20 days of Schoola” a campaign that is helping fund special art programs at Yick Wo Elementary.
Yick Wo Elementary is a small public school in San Francisco. Children from North Beach, Russian Hill and the Chinatown neighborhoods attend this school which is located on Lombard Street and Jones. By donating gently used clothing to Schoola and Yick Wo Elementary, we’ll be able to help fund their valuable art program that isn’t just in art class, but spreads to other subjects like Math, Science and more. I chose this school because of my love for the arts and San Francisco, and the fact we were just there last month on our road trip (more to come on the San Francisco leg of the road trip soon).
Please join me in helping out Yick Wo Elementary by donating a few articles of gently used clothing. All you need to do is request a bag here: DONATE. Once you’re at the Schoola website, enter the zip code of 91433, and search for Yick Wo Elementary. Complete the information and you will receive confirmation that a bag was sent.
Once you receive your bag, fill it with it with clean gently used clothes, package it up and ship it. The shipping is even paid for by Schoola. It’s as simple as that. So please support art and Yick Wo Elementary.
How else can you help out these valuable programs? If you’re looking to stock your kids closets with name brand clothing that fits and at valuable prices – check out what is currently available at Schoola. Again, 40% of the money received goes directly to the school selected.
