So I was just thinking the other day about how time is just flying with my munchkins. The Princess will be celebrating her Fabulous Five birthday soon, and we need to start planning! With that big milestone comes a big purchase, one Grammie has promised her for a few years – A Big Girl Bed. So this week we headed off to our local Sit ‘n Sleep to see what is available.
When I was pregnant, my mother in law felt it important that the kids each had their own bed, no hand me downs from each other or anyone else. She selected a convertible model that went from crib to toddler bed, then full bed. Now that she is turning 5, the hunt is on for the right “Big Girl Bed”.
At our local Sit ‘n Sleep, we spoke with one of the sales ladies that we just loved. Norma was very helpful in guiding us to exactly what we were looking for as well as our concerns regarding The Princess’ dust mite allergy.
When it comes to a dust mite allergy, you have a couple of options:
- Dust mites do not like to eat the memory foam, therefore there will be less dust mites living in a memory foam mattress than an innerspring mattress.
- With either a memory foam mattress or an innerspring mattress the best protection against dust mites is full encasement of the mattress and box spring.
As for mattresses, Sit ‘n Sleep, they offer many varieties.
- Beautyrest
- Comforpedic
- Tempur-Pedic
- Sealy
- Stearns & Foster
- Sherwood
- Serta
- iComfort
- Aireloom
- KLUFT
- Dormeo Octaspring
- Kingsdown
- BeautySleep
With that many different brands of mattresses, it can become overwhelming, however with the knowledgeable staff and your price range, they can direct you to the mattress that is right for you. Better yet, with the upcoming holiday weekend, it’s the best time to get a great deal!
Andrea Woroch, a consumer savings expert, partnered with Sit ‘n Sleep to come up with the top six helpful hints in selecting a mattress:
- Do Your Research: With all the resources available to consumers now a days, internet, numerous retail outlets, etc; research the different mattress types to understand what works best for you.
- Reviews: Read customer reviews as well as reviews in magazines like Consumer Reports to find a reputable and established mattress retailer. A bigger retailer may have the widest selection and better pricing.
- Comfort: The highest importance should be if the mattress provides the right amount of firmness and support for your body to get you the best night’s sleep.
- Hidden Costs: Yes, there are always hidden costs when purchasing anything. Consider the cost of delivery, removal of the old mattress, bed frames, mattress covers and bedding.
- One Size Does Not Fit All: Selecting the right size of mattress is just as important. Think about other variables, for instance accommodating guests if in a guest room; how quickly a child may outgrow their bed, or your favorite pet taking over most of your bed. Most importantly, will it fit in the space your are buying for.
- Take It For A Spin: Yes, you can “test drive” the mattress. In the show room, lay on them for a few minutes – that’s what the models are for! Make sure you and your partner shop together for the best fit for the both of you.
In talking with Norma, we told her we wanted a mattress that was going to be reliable, comfortable with a long lifespan considering the fact we were purchasing for a 5 year old. I’m sure we’ll catch her jumping, playing, even have a friend sleep over or two. Mom and Dad may or may not have slumber parties with her – hehe. We discovered, as with all things, one brand may have several different price points based on style and firmness. For us, the inner springs were just as important as the support of the edge support of the mattress, therefore, the Sherwood Kendall LF was the perfect fit.
Things to keep in mind: Mattresses in the show room are broken in. They are what your mattress SHOULD feel like. Remember that when you get your mattress home, it is brand new. It takes approximately 30 – 60 days to break in a mattress and get the actual “feel” of it. Take care of your mattress in order to insure longevity.- Purchase a mattress pad to protect it from dirt, bed bugs, dust and stains
- Flip the mattress every 6 months if possible
- Wash the bedding and pads weekly and replace as they’re worn out. Pillows should be replaced every 1-3 years.
The princess is quite excited! Her birthday is in April, but she’s going to end up with her present a little early. Why? Well, the holiday is here and it’s the perfect time to buy! Now it’s just a matter of selecting the bedding to go along with it.

I hope that she enjoys her new bed.
Yes, but now the challenge is to agree on bedding!
We like the memory foam too. Good to know it’s mites resistant!
Great advice! We just got my son a toddler bed – when it’s time for a big bed, I’ll know what to check out!
