I have always thought of Minnie, our Labrador Retriever, as one of my kids. As a matter of fact, she is my first born! When I was invited to review the Back Seat Barrier by Kurgo, I was curious to see if it would keep all my kiddos safe while traveling.
The Kurgo Back Seat Barrier is a thick cloth barrier that attaches to the back of your front seats creating a soft wall between you and your dog.
When traveling with Minnie and the kids, she loves to be perched on the center console between the second row of bucket seats. It seems like an okay place for her to be, however, if I have to stop abruptly, she loses her footing and falls to the floor of the car. A couple of times she may have even hurt herself in the fall.
While I am driving and she is standing on the center console, she blocks my view when I’m looking through my rear view mirror. I find myself constantly telling her to lay down so I can see.
When I took the Kurgo Back Seat Barrier out of the box, it looked rather intimidating. All of the straps and hooks; it looked like a job for a professional to install. However, it was really quite simple. The head rest goes through the rings at the top of the barrier, then you just strap down the bottom straps to the anchors in your floor or around the bottom bars of the seats.
Some of the other features of the Back Seat Barrier include:
- Protects passengers and cargo from roaming dogs
- Protects dogs from launching forward during quick stops
- Bottom mesh for rear climate control venting
- Front seat stays clean of dog hair and dirt
- Universal fit for most vehicles from a compact to a SUV
- Simple installation and removal
- Cup holder, storage pocket and all steel hardware
I set up the Back Seat Barrier for Minnie and she immediately inspected it (typical dog). Since it seemed to check out okay in her eyes, she was ready to try it out and go for a ride. During a quick trip to pick up some dinner, she managed to stay behind the barrier just watching the passersby. It worked perfectly, until I stop the car and got out. When I returned she was already in the front driver side seat. I got back in the car, sent her to the back (which took her a bit to hop back over the barrier) and proceeded home.
So, my thoughts on the Back Seat Barrier: while traveling long-distance, I would use it as well as a harness to keep Minnie and the family safe. I do love how while on our quick little errand, it did keep her behind the kids’s seats, and off that center console, blocking my view.

Disclaimer: I received a Kurgo Back Seat Barrier to review, however all opinions of the product are my own.
My puppies wouldn’t like this feature. My chi loves to ride in my lap in the car, I swear he would drive if he could. heheh.
