Do you have one of these flat panel tvs in your home like we do? I have to tell you, with two toddlers running around, and so many friends from numerous playdates, it’s a wonder that it hasn’t fallen over!
Over the years, we considered mounting our flat panel tv. When we initially purchased it, we had the option of getting a wall mount. The thing is, one wall of the room pictured above is all windows; there is this little spot above the fireplace; then a third wall covered in cabinets. At the time, we felt the component stand was the best option.
As the kids have grown from baby to toddler, the set up never seemed that safe. The kids were constantly inching closer to the tv. Heck, who wouldn’t want to touch Mickey Mouse? Now that they are older, and are into running around, wrestling or dancing, just bumping the stand is a HUGE worry.
I guess my concerns are serious! Did you know that in 2011, A US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report on flat panel TV safety revealed:
- A child is killed every three weeks from an unsecured TV
- Every 45 minutes a child visits an emergency room due to a TV tip-over related injury
- Between 2000 and 2011, 215 fatalities have resulted from TV tip-over
- An estimated 17,000 people each year, the majority of which are children, are treated for injuries from TV tip-overs
- Reported cases have increased almost 25% from 2006 to 2010, and over the last 10 years, injuries have increased by 31%

Wow, I had no idea that flat screen tvs were that dangerous. I know that they are thinner and often put on a tv stand. Of course, most tvs are lighter than they were a few years ago as well. We haven’t secured ours but we don’t allow my toddler to play around the tv, especially, behind it.
Ours is mounted on the wall above our fireplace.
We are going to be getting a SANUS TV mount for our bedroom. So scary to think what could happen if a tv tipped over onto our children 🙁
