A New Tradition

When it comes to anything with the kids, the grandparents really want to get involved.  Since my parents have remarried, that means lots of people.

This year, everyone wanted to get involved.  Being my favorite holiday, Halloween is just special!  That being said, I found myself making a Halloween dinner for 10, spur of the moment.  AHHHHH, initially, I was only planning for us and the kids…then slowly, hour by hour, it turned from 4 to 10. And when I say last minute, I mean I realized we were having 10 at 2pm – dinner was to be at 5:30.  Luckily I had already made a lasagna the day before.  Thank goodness I planned ahead!!!  With that, I was able to quickly add spaghetti  a salad and bread to make sure there was enough food for everyone.

Besides the fact I was scrambling to throw together a dinner, I also had to go with the theme – HALLOWEEN, right?  I had black table cloths on hand – amazing, right?  MIL brought over black paper plates (so I didn’t have to worry about a big cleanup) and we had silverware.  Phew – the plan was set.
Even though I was scrambling, and while putting this together, I still had to run and get my 5 year old from Kindergarten at 3pm (who also decided to play until 3:45pm – arrr), this turned out to be the best Halloween ever.

A new tradition was born that day.  Having the grandparents there to share in the excitement of getting the kids dressed up to go out to trick or treat.  Even my mom and step dad had planned to walk door to door with us.

If the grandparents live close, I so recommend making a party of it.  These guys only stay little for so long, it was really fun including them in the magic and spookiness of Halloween.

  1. What a great idea! I love it! Halloween is always a conundrum for us, but I really like your idea for a family dinner, and stressing that our kids are only young enough for Halloween for so long.

Nice job! And thank you for linking up with the holiday hop!

  2. So nice that your extended family is close enough to enjoy your children so regularly. I think it’s wonderful that you embraced the last minute dinner guests and were able to enjoy the holiday together.

  3. Halloween is my favorite holiday too. This year, the kids were little bo peep (just turned two last week) and her little lost lamb (just turned five months a couple days ago). Looks like you had a great time!
