We left Vegas after having one last breakfast with my mom and step dad and headed out on the road. First stop was the Hoover Dam, one of the largest of its time.
Driving down the 93, we followed the signs (and GPS) to The Hoover Dam. Our goal – to drive across the dam.
But we then decided we wanted to get out and take a closer look. Little did we know, you had to drive over the Hoover Dam, then go past a few parking lots on the Arizona side of the Hoover Dam to find an “oversized lot” to park an RV. So down we walked as we got closer and closer to the dam itself and walked back across.
Since we were just “driving through”, we only walked across, checked out the gift store and took a few pictures.
The above photo is so telling to me. We’ve been hearing that California is in a drought, but apparently, it’s not just our state. See how the Colorado River water level is so low. Water conservation is key!
If you are interested in seeing the Hoover Dam or driving it like we did, make sure you are in one of these vehicles:

- Light trucks (including pickups with covered beds)
- Dual-wheel rear-axle vehicles
- Vans
- Sport utility vehicles
- motorcycles
- Semi-truck “bob-tails” without trailers
- Buses WITHOUT luggage NOTE: All buses will be inspected, including a walk-through of the passenger area; carry-ons such as small backpacks are okay.

For another route over the Hoover Dam, you can take The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (Colorado River Bridge). It will give you an amazing view of The Black Canyon and The Hoover Dam as it is 1500 ft south and 900 ft over the Dam.
However, if you’re interested in a tour of the Hoover Dam, you can visit their website: https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/
I haven’t been to the Hoover dam before but have been to a few other cool historical places in my lifetime. It looks like a great place to see. Drought has been very rough on multiple states over the last several years. 🙁
