The latest addition to Kidspace Children’s Museum, the Imagination Workshop, is set to open later this fall inside of the Roberts Pavilion, in the Southeast corner of the W. M. Keck Foundation Gallery.
The Imagination Workshop is the next major opening of an exhibit space since The Robert & Mary Galvin Physics Forest opened to the public on July 12, 2012. Construction is set to begin on the 520 square foot exhibit space late next month and should be finalized in time for a mid-fall grand opening.
The Imagination Workshop will be a space for children of all ages to assemble, dismantle, and repurpose all manner of materials and objects. Whether it’s a toy or radio, electronic or mechanical device, new object or old, this resource will present children with limitless opportunities to discover the inner workings of everyday objects, as well as the principles that make them work. The concept behind the Imagination Workshop was developed by a team of Kidspace staff in conjunction with the Kidspace Board of Directors. “The Imagination Workshop will be a wonderful addition to the existing experiences at Kidspace Children’s Museum. This space will provide children an opportunity to make things, take things apart, invent something new, or simply experience the joy of tinkering,” said Lauren Kaye, Kidspace’s Senior Operations Manager.
Though specific programming and activities are still being planned for this new exhibit space, all the activities for the Imagination Workshop will utilize the innovative educational approaches that Kidspace is known for. The open-ended nature of the space lends itself to a wide range of innovative educational techniques that Kidspace is eager to implement. “Kidspace is always looking for ways to open up the learning experience for kids, to give them the means to achieve educational milestones on their own terms and encourage a love and curiosity for a variety of subjects,” said Kaye.
The Imagination Workshop is the next addition to Kidspace that has been funded by The Campaign for the Future of Kidspace, a capital campaign announced in May 2012, which was launched to build new exhibits, upgrade existing learning environments, improve guest amenities, and develop new curriculum and programs. The Galvin Physics Forest was the first project to be funded by the campaign. The Imagination Workshop was planned along with several other exhibit and program concepts as a part of an exhibit master plan which details the next several projects to open at Kidspace in the coming years.
