Epilepsy Walk of Orange County

Epilepsy Walk

This is my beloved Minnie.  She’s been an amazing dog to have while my kids have been little, as they’ve climbed, tugged, kicked and pulled her and she still adores them.  She was recently diagnosed Epileptic last week.  She’s been having seizures periodically for the last few years, but they were gradually getting worse, so we decided to see the vet.  Of course, the vet put her on medications that it has taken time for her to adjust to, having all kinds of other issues during the process, it’s been a rather stressful time for me and my “first born”.

Well, multiply this times 10.  Imagine your 5 year old son with Epilepsy and what he has to endure.  Then add in an 18 month old daughter who is currently having mini seizures every 10 minutes.  Yes, this is a true story and “Mom” is a friend of mine.  She called asking for help – help raising awareness!  With all the doctors appointments, therapy sessions and such, my friend Monica is an amazing mom who is working hard to help get The Epilepsy Walk of Orange County out to the public.

This is a video of her beautiful daughter having a “staring spell” as an absence (petit mal) seizure.  Would you have recognized it as a seizure if your daughter was having one?

Saturday, May 18th, 2013 The Epilepsy Walk Orange County will take place at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa as those affected by epilepsy rally to keep the programs and services that improve their quality of life. This is a family event that includes a non-competitive walk around the park beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by a fun carnival for children, a silent auction, and a barbecue lunch.

The Epilepsy Walk Orange County brings together those with epilepsy, their families, caregivers, medical and other professionals committed to the epilepsy mission, and the general public. Up to 700 participants are expected to attend to assist in raising awareness about epilepsy, and to help raise funds necessary to support programs.

Epilepsy requires an urgent response in order to stop seizures. “Epilepsy is strongly misunderstood and so much more prevalent in Orange County than anyone realizes. It is imperative that our community be made aware of this so those that are suffering from it can be properly diagnosed and treated. We think that everyone deserves to live a life to the fullest and free from seizures”,” stated Jennifer Gunther, ESNOC Board of Directors President.

I have been working with Monica to raise some donations for the silent auction for the event.  Here is just a sample of a few of the auction items that we have accumulated for this amazing cause:

  1. You don’t hear much about Epilepsy, so I was excited to see this post. My 7 year old was diagnosed about 3 years ago with Childhood Absence Epilepsy and he suffers from petit mal seizures. Luckily they are well controlled with his meds, but I know how scary it is to not know what is happening with your own child. Thank you for sharing this!

  2. @Mormishmom, wow, I didn’t know. I am so thankful my friend contacted me about this amazing cause. I just couldn’t imagine not knowing how to help my child. Thankfully he has a great medical staff behind him.
